As an ex-reporter myself, we were very rarely in the office - and quite frankly any excuse to get out was good enough for me!! I am still in contact with some 'old school' news editors in the industry, and they tell me they despair at this style of newsgathering (or lack of) which has now developed in some newsrooms.
